We resume a close reading of this book, from Chapter 6 to the end (Part 1 was on 28 June).
In the early decades of the twentieth century, Anglo American set up a financial conglomerate to control many underground mines. Its huge profitability was founded on industrial scale super-exploitation of African mineworkers in the migrant labour system.
This session studies how Anglo American was the biggest economic beneficiary of apartheid from 1948 to 1994, by which time it dominated the South African economy, controlling over 70% Johannesburg Stock Exchange. From the 1970s the company presented itself as ‘progressive’, but this was no more than a manoeuvre to defuse criticism and co-opt opposition. Innes documents how Anglo expanded its operations in an imperialist manner across Africa and concludes that Anglo American exemplified the term ‘monopoly capitalism’.

En las primeras décadas del siglo XX, Anglo American creó un conglomerado financiero para controlar numerosas minas subterráneas. Su enorme rentabilidad se basaba en la superexplotación a escala industrial de los mineros africanos en el sistema de mano de obra migrante.
En esta sesión se estudia cómo Anglo American fue el mayor beneficiario económico del apartheid entre 1948 y 1994, época en la que dominaba la economía sudafricana y controlaba más del 70% de la Bolsa de Johannesburgo. A partir de la década de 1970, la empresa se presentó como “progresista”, pero no era más que una maniobra para desactivar las críticas y cooptar a la oposición. Innes documenta cómo Anglo expandió sus operaciones de forma imperialista por toda África y concluye que Anglo American ejemplifica el término “capitalismo monopolista”.
